Christmas 2022, whispers of a possible romance between Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter start spreading after she left a comment on his instagram. A month later they are posting at the same Paris hotel. In February 2023, rumors gained traction when photos of the two hanging out together and sharing clothes started popping up. The photos, plus a submission about a possible horse riding date to the celebrity gossip account @deuxmoi had the internet sold.

A few days after the first photo of Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter surfaced on social media, Camila Cabello liked a video on Instagram featuring one of Sabrina’s recent performances. In the weeks that followed, Camila continued to like various posts related to Sabrina, despite not following her on Instagram.

On March 10, 2023, Shawn and Sabrina were spotted leaving Miley Cyrus’ album release party together. A few days later, Entertainment Tonight confirmed their relationship. On the same day as the confirmation, the couple was seen leaving the Vanity Fair Oscar Party together and were rumored to have been spotted in LA getting cozy. That same night, Camila shares a photo making a weird face, hinting at her being aware of what’s going on.

Though there’s no official word on when Shawn and Sabrina called it quits, we can only hope it happened before he showed up at Coachella and was seen with Camila Cabello—just weeks after his last public appearance with Sabrina.

In March 2024, while promoting her new album C,XOXO, Camila Cabello revealed on the Call Her Daddy podcast that she does, in fact, stalk her exes’ new girlfriends on social media. This seemingly confirmed the rumors that she had been keeping tabs on Sabrina Carpenter’s Instagram when Sabrina and Shawn were first seen together. Camila also took a subtle jab at Sabrina and Shawn in her track “June Gloom,” singing, “She’s cool, I heard. Won’t act surprised, I saw the pictures.”

With the release of Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet, fans have picked up on a few lyrics that seem to hint at what went down between Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello leading up to and during Coachella. In the track “Taste,” Sabrina sings, “You’re wonderin’ why half his clothes went missin’, My body’s where they’re at,” referencing the time she was seen wearing Shawn’s clothes. On “Coincidence,” she gets even more direct: “Last week, you didn’t have any doubts. This week, you’re holding space for her tongue in your mouth,” and “What a surprise, Your phone just died, Your car drove itself from L.A. to her thighs, Palm Springs looks nice, but who’s by your side?” clearly alluding to the couple being spotted together at Coachella.
