With a year full of incredible films it was obvious there would be a lot of talented actors and filmmakers that didn’t get nominated, these are the few that really stood out to me.
The first and most noticeable snub from all categories was Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers. Being one of the 40 highest-grossing films of 2024 and featuring a stunning cast, including Zendaya, it’s hard to understand what the Academy was thinking. At the very least, I was expecting to see Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s names in the Best Original Score list. While not as gag-worthy, Guadagnino’s Queer starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey was also snubbed. Luca Guadagnino’s absence from the nominations has sparked significant (and real) discussion on Twitter:
I was also shocked not to see Pamela Anderson for Best Actress. While not my favorite film of the year, The Last Showgirl almost felt like it was created to get Pamela the Oscar. She truly embodies the character of Shelly and does an incredible job while doing so. You can tell she worked incredibly hard to perfect her role, and it’s sad to see it go unnoticed. However, I do think her performance will help her get more roles in the future and I’m hopeful that Oscar will be hers eventually.
I was also shocked to see Dune: Part Two missing from the Directing, Acting, and Editing categories. With only five nominations, the film received half the amount of nominations as the first installment. This is especially surprising given that the second film is overwhelmingly more enjoyable and well-done (though both are masterpieces).
Margaret Qualley was left out of the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in The Substance. Considering her Golden Globe nomination and the film’s Best Picture nomination this was genuinely shocking to see.
Those were the most shocking snubs to me personally, but here’s the list of all the films that were not considered at this year’s Academy Awards:
- Blitz
- Furiosa
- Babygirl
- Juror #2
- Longlegs
- Civil War
- Challengers
- Madame Web
- We Live In Time
- The Piano Lesson
- Transformers One
- I Saw The TV Glow
